US unemployment claims fall to 194,000

Initial unemployment claims in the United States fell to 194,000 for the week ending October 17, according to the Department of Labor. This figure surpassed market expectations, as analysts had projected 200,000 new claims.

While initial filings decreased, continuing claims—which track those still receiving benefits—rose by 25,000 for the period ending October 10, reaching a total of 1.728 million. This increase in continuing claims was higher than the median estimate of 1.715 million.

The decline in initial claims represents one of the lower levels seen in decades, suggesting a stable labor market despite lukewarm hiring trends and a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.2%.
