Donald Trump approval rating hits record low of 33% ahead of midterms

Two weeks before the midterm elections on November 3, 2026, President Donald Trump's approval rating has reached a historic low of 33%, according to a joint poll by Ipsos, The Washington Post, and ABC News. The survey indicates that 66% of respondents disapprove of his management, with 52% expressing strong disapproval. This marks a significant decline from his 45% approval rating in February 2025.

Key drivers of public discontent include the rising cost of living and the economic impact of the conflict with Iran, which has significantly increased fuel prices. Approximately 71% of respondents described gasoline as unaffordable. Additionally, 72% of those surveyed believe the country is moving in the wrong direction.

The political landscape shows a growing advantage for Democrats. In congressional district elections, likely voters support Democratic candidates by an 8-percentage-point margin (52% to 44%). This lead is also reflected among registered voters (50% to 42%), a notable increase from July when the gap was only 3 points.

Demographic shifts are also evident, with declining support among Latino voters and Asian American communities. While Republicans have invested heavily in the campaign, with over $740 million spent by various groups between September and mid-October, the polling suggests significant challenges for the party in maintaining control of the House and Senate.
