Anthropic Fable 5 Mythos 5 export controls US Commerce Department

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced in late June 2026 that it has withdrawn the emergency export controls placed on Anthropic’s advanced AI systems Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The controls, imposed on 12 June, barred foreign nationals—including Anthropic employees—from accessing the models worldwide, forcing the company to shut both services down for roughly three weeks. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote, “The restrictions … are withdrawn. A license is no longer required for the export, reexport, or internal transfer of Mythos or Fable models.”

Anthropic confirmed it will begin restoring access globally starting early July, with a staged rollout that also saw limited access to Mythos 5 for trusted U.S. partners from 26 June. In exchange, the company pledged to proactively detect security risks, cooperate on safety protocols, and report any malicious activity to U.S. authorities. The reversal follows negotiations between Anthropic’s leadership, including CEO Dario Amodei, and the Trump administration, after concerns that the models could be exploited for cyber‑attacks were mitigated by new safety classifiers.

The lift removes a major operational bottleneck for enterprise customers and developers who rely on Anthropic’s models for complex coding, data analysis, and cybersecurity tasks, and signals a broader U.S. approach to overseeing frontier AI while maintaining the nation’s competitive edge.
