US warns Ukraine not to attack non‑Russian ships in Black Sea
The Trump administration delivered an official diplomatic warning to Kyiv, telling Ukrainian forces to cease attacks on vessels that are not owned by Russia in the Black Sea. The admonition came after a series of drone strikes hit four tankers near the Russian port of Novorossiysk, one of which was chartered by the American oil giant Chevron.
U.S. officials said the warning followed a meeting in Washington between Chevron chief executive Mike Wirth, other senior oil‑industry representatives and senior members of the administration. Washington stressed that the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) is a vital conduit for Kazakh crude destined for European markets and an alternative to Russian energy supplies.
The CPC carries roughly two percent of the world’s daily crude output. Chevron owns 15 % of the consortium and holds a 50 % share in the Tengiz field, which supplies about 12 % of the company’s global oil production. While the pipeline and the field were not physically damaged, the drone attacks limited loading capacity at the Novorossiysk terminal, forcing Kazakhstan to curb its oil output.
Russian spokesman Dmitri Peskov added that Ukraine’s strikes also affect U.S. interests, noting that attacks on the CPC target American shareholders as well as Russian and Kazakh assets.
