Ukraine urges UN meeting on Black Sea attacks

Overview

Ukraine continues its diplomatic push, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urging an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting for 27 July after Russian bombings of at least three civilian cargo vessels in the Black Sea. The strikes have killed or injured dozens of crew members, halted traffic through Ukraine’s maritime corridor during the peak grain‑harvest season, and raised fears of global food‑price spikes and famine in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Kyiv reports further incidents, including damage to the Panama‑flagged bulk carrier Lady Zehma by a drone and rocket attack, and maintains its own drone raids on Russian oil refineries, energy sites and Wildberries logistics centres, which have sparked fires and caused civilian casualties, including a child’s death. India also protested a Russian attack that killed an Indian sailor.

The diplomatic effort seeks to stop the attacks, restore safe grain exports and limit revenue flowing to Russia’s war effort while urging broader international pressure on Moscow.
