U.S. weekly jobless claims fall to 208,000, indicating steady labor market

Initial unemployment benefit claims in the United States dropped by 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 208,000 for the week ending July 11, the lowest level in ten weeks and below analysts' forecasts. The four‑week moving average of claims also declined, reflecting continued labor‑market stability.

The unemployment rate fell to 4.2% from 4.3% in May, while the number of people receiving benefits after the initial week slipped by 16,000 to 1.805 million for the week ending July 4. The Federal Reserve’s Beige Book noted modest employment gains and persistent skilled‑worker shortages, characterising the market as “slow hire, slow fire.”
