USDA raises global corn production forecasts, triggering price drops

Global corn production forecasts have been revised upward, leading to a decline in market prices. According to the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) from the USDA, global production is expected to exceed 1.29 billion metric tons, approximately 3 million tons more than previous estimates.

This increase is driven primarily by higher expected yields in the United States, with an estimated production rise of about six million tons compared to previous forecasts. Argentina and Ukraine are also seeing increased harvest potential. Conversely, production is expected to decrease in Mexico, the Philippines, and the European Union, with France seeing a significant projected decline.

In the United States, higher-than-expected corn stocks have also raised questions regarding the reliability of USDA feeding data. Reports indicate that corn inventories were over 2 billion bushels at the start of the month, representing a 35% increase from the previous year and 9% above analyst estimates. This discrepancy challenges current assessments of demand, specifically regarding how much corn is utilized for feed and residual uses.
