Used electric vehicle prices face significant depreciation in 2026
The used electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing significant depreciation, creating both challenges for owners and opportunities for buyers. In the United Kingdom, data from April 2026 indicates that three-year-old EVs retain an average of only 38% of their original list price. In contrast, residual values in Germany, France, and Spain remain higher, averaging above 46%.
Several factors contribute to this volatility. Rapid technological advancements mean older models are frequently superseded by new generations offering better range, faster charging, and updated software. Additionally, aggressive price cuts on new models and the introduction of more affordable electric options further depress the value of existing used stock.
For consumers, this trend offers substantial discounts on premium and popular models. For instance, certain three-to-five-year-old vehicles are seeing price reductions of 40% to 50%. Notable examples include the Tesla Model 3, which has seen significant price drops, and high-end models like the Audi e-tron, which can now be found at a fraction of their original near-100,000 euro price tag.
