US‑EU dispute stalls Bosnia’s high representative appointment

The Peace Implementation Council (PIC) has been unable to agree on a new High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, reigniting a wider clash between the United States and the European Union. Washington backs Italian diplomat Antonio Zanardi Landi, while key EU members argue that the candidate must emerge from a broader European consensus.

Bosnian officials warned that the deadlock threatens the country’s stability. As Adil Kulenović noted, “the split between Washington and Brussels breaks over Bosnia’s back,” and Azra Zornić warned that external rivalries “could become catastrophic for the people of Bosnia.” The dispute highlights growing strategic tension over Bosnia’s future, the role of the Office of the High Representative, and the balance of influence between the US and Europe in the Western Balkans.
