Ushuaia intensifies winter snow‑clearing and launches Cerro Hermitte landslide stabilization

The Municipality of Ushuaia, Argentina, continued its Operativo Invierno 2026 after intense snowfall, deploying personnel, trucks, salt, and gravel from the evening of June 30 through the early hours of July 1. Work focused on the city’s main arteries, school routes, public‑transport corridors and emergency service paths, with crews applying de‑icing agents and spreading aggregates to keep roads safe.

At the same time, the city’s Secretariat of Infrastructure, Obras y Servicios Públicos began large‑scale soil‑movement work on Cerro Hermitte to stabilise a landslide‑prone slope. About 110,000 m³ of material must be moved; roughly 18,000 m³ have already been displaced. Private operators and consulting firms are involved, and officials said, “hoy es el primer día operativo del topador… estamos satisfechos por avanzar con las tareas que darán estabilidad a una ladera que provoca que los vecinos vivan en vigilia constante.” The efforts aim to restore normal traffic, protect residents and prevent further slope failures.
