Argentina awards $700 million for 20 battery storage projects

Argentina’s Secretariat of Energy approved 20 battery‑storage projects under the Alma‑SADI and Alma‑GBA calls, delivering a total capacity of about 700 MW and a US$700 million investment. The projects are to be built in seven regions—Buenos Aires, the Northwest, the Chaco‑Formosa NEA, Misiones‑Corrientes, the Entre Ríos Litoral, Santa Fe Litoral and the Pampa—to reinforce the Sistema Argentino de Interconexión (SADI) and reduce the risk of power cuts.

The awarded firms include Genneia (seven projects), DQD Energy (eight projects), 360 Energy Solar, Aluar and Intermepro. The tender received 235 technical offers totalling more than 8,300 MW, far exceeding the 700 MW target, indicating strong market interest. The storage systems will provide rapid response, grid stability and better integration of intermittent renewable generation.

Aluar, Argentina’s largest aluminium producer, announced a US$50 million investment in two battery‑storage installations—30 MW in San Fernando (Buenos Aires) and 50 MW in Goya (NEA)—as part of the same national programme. The adjudications follow the earlier Alma‑GBA allocation for the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and are part of the government’s broader emergency‑energy plan to improve grid reliability and support the country’s energy transition.
