Usina do Gasômetro receives flood protection in Porto Alegre

The Usina do Gasômetro, a landmark in Porto Alegre, is being equipped with a dedicated flood protection system. The project, managed by the Municipal Secretariat of Works and Infrastructure (Smoi), involves the installation of 46 specialized structures designed to seal doors and windows on the building's first floor.

With an investment of nearly R$ 700,000, the work is expected to be completed by the end of November. The system is intended to prevent the building from flooding during extreme weather events similar to those experienced in 2024. The floodgates will be activated if the Guaíba River level near Cais Mauá approaches 4.5 meters, the building's flood threshold.

This installation represents the final stage of reinforcing defenses in the city's Historic Center, following previous works on the Mauá Wall floodgates and pumping stations. Mayor Sebastião Melo noted that while the building is a historical heritage site nearing reopening to the public, the project aims to provide protection while preserving its original characteristics.
