USMCA renewal stalls, prompting US and Canada trade uncertainty

On July 1, the United States announced it would not renew the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA) in its current form, triggering the ten‑year review mechanism. The decision was widely anticipated in the US but sparked alarm in Canada and Mexico, where media and politicians warned of prolonged uncertainty for businesses that depend on stable trade rules. In the US, both Republicans and Democrats cited unresolved issues such as Canadian dairy and lumber, Mexican energy and investment, as well as labour and environmental standards.

The uncertainty is affecting the agricultural sector as well. Chris Butts, executive director of the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association, said the group hopes the U.S. Trade Representative will limit the flow of certain fruit and vegetable imports during the traditional marketing season to protect domestic growers from a flood of cheap imports. Butts warned that continued investment in farming infrastructure in Mexico and Central America could further pressure U.S. producers.
