Mexico and U.S. schedule third USMCA (T‑MEC) talks in Mexico City

Mexico and the United States will hold a third round of United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA or T‑MEC) negotiations from 21 to 23 July 2026 in Mexico City. The talks will involve Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, focusing on steel and aluminum tariffs, automotive rules of origin, security‑economic measures, labor standards, agriculture, and electronic‑payment services.

Mexico recently reported a record $54 billion in exports to the United States in May, an 8 % annual rise, underscoring the commercial stakes of the agreement. Recent Mexican reforms include tightened dual‑use export controls, a new single‑window customs system, a nationwide customs‑agent programme, updated intellectual‑property protections, and environmental steps on avocado and wastewater exports. Industry observers note that the revised rules of origin are prompting smaller automotive parts suppliers to relocate production within North America, creating new opportunities for regional firms.

Canada also expressed a willingness to cooperate with Mexico to counter potential U.S. tariffs on the auto sector, highlighting the broader North‑American dimension of the upcoming negotiations.
