USS Abraham Lincoln returns home after record nine-month deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln is returning to its homeport in San Diego following a nine-month deployment in the Middle East. The mission, which was originally scheduled to end in May, was extended due to the ongoing military conflict with Iran.

The deployment set a modern Navy record, with the crew of approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines spending over 260 days at sea, including more than 200 consecutive days without a port call. Reports from crew members and their families have highlighted severe challenges, including food and water shortages, plumbing failures, and declining mental health. Some reports indicated instances of sailors attempting to go overboard due to exhaustion and stress.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao addressed these concerns, stating that while the crew has been pushed to their limits, they have not broken. Cao noted that a small number of mental health cases were treated without loss of life and that meal plans were adjusted during supply shortages.

The USS George Washington has arrived in the Arabian Sea to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln and continue supporting U.S. naval operations in the region as the United States maintains pressure on Iran through both military and economic means.
