Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao confirmed in a letter to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand that eight suicide attempts occurred within the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group during its recent deployment. The incidents involved personnel from the aircraft carrier, its air wing, escorting destroyers, and various aviation squadrons. While eight attempts were recorded, officials emphasized that no deaths by suicide occurred during the mission.

The deployment, which began in November 2025, was significantly extended due to ongoing military operations against Iran in the Middle East. The strike group spent 286 days at sea, including a period of uninterrupted time at sea, before making a stop in Thailand in early September.

Reports from families and lawmakers had previously raised concerns regarding deteriorating conditions on the ship, including mental health struggles, food shortages, and hygiene issues. While the Navy denied a widespread mental health crisis and dismissed some reports as exaggerated, Cao acknowledged localized piping failures and issues with desalination units. To support the crew, the vessel carried five chaplains, a psychologist, a social worker, and a psychological support dog.
