USS Minnesota Submarine Completes First Forward Deployment, Returns to Guam

The nuclear‑powered Virginia‑class fast‑attack submarine USS Minnesota (SSN‑783) returned to its home port at Naval Base Guam on 29 July after completing its inaugural forward deployment. The deployment marked the U.S. Navy’s first forward‑deployed Virginia‑class boat in the Western Pacific, enhancing undersea presence and deterrence in a contested region.

During the nine‑month tour the submarine took part in the multinational Exercise Valiant Shield 2026, visited ports in Okinawa and Sasebo, Japan, and made a stop in Australia, underscoring U.S. maritime partnerships with allied navies. Navy officials, including Capt. Christopher Carter of Submarine Squadron 15, highlighted the crew’s demonstrated readiness, endurance and advanced capabilities, noting the deployment’s role in strengthening alliances and sustaining forward‑deployed undersea forces.

The homecoming ceremony included traditional recognitions for crew members, and two officers and twenty enlisted sailors earned their submarine warfare insignia.
