US Navy submarine milestones

In late July 2026 the U.S. Navy highlighted two significant submarine events. The Virginia‑class fast‑attack submarine USS Minnesota (SSN‑783) completed its inaugural forward deployment from Naval Base Guam, returning on 29 July after a nine‑month tour that included participation in Exercise Valiant Shield 2026, port visits to Okinawa and Sasebo in Japan, and a stop in Australia. Navy officials praised the crew’s readiness and the deployment’s role in bolstering undersea presence and alliance ties in the contested Western Pacific. A homecoming ceremony on Guam recognized the crew, with two officers and twenty enlisted sailors earning their submarine warfare insignia.

Concurrently, the Ohio‑class guided‑missile submarine USS Georgia concluded its final mission on 27 July and is scheduled for inactivation on 31 July 2026, ending 42 years of service. Based at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, the vessel has been a key component of the U.S. strategic nuclear deterrent and precision‑strike capability, capable of carrying up to 154 Tomahawk missiles and supporting special‑operations forces.
