Utkal University campus gripped by tension after reported explosions

Panic erupted at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar late Sunday night following reports of loud explosions near the boys' hostel. The incident occurred around 11:30 PM, amid heightened tensions surrounding upcoming student union elections.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the nature of the sound. Some students and members of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) alleged that crude bombs were hurled near the hostel, accusing members of the ABVP. However, university election officer Jagneshwar Dandapat dismissed the reports of a bomb attack as “entirely a rumour,” and police are currently investigating whether the noise was caused by a bomb or a firecracker.

The incident led to protests at the university's main gate, where students clashed with police and demanded accountability for security failures. In response, authorities have reinforced security at sensitive locations, including hostels and the market complex, and have increased CCTV monitoring across the campus.
