Campus violence and unrest in Odisha

Overview

Tensions have escalated across educational institutions in Odisha amid upcoming student union elections. On October 8, multiple bomb explosions targeted the residence of the Principal and a boys’ hostel at Vyasanagar Autonomous College in the Jajpur district. Police recovered unexploded bombs at the scene, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.

Following these events, reports of explosions near a boys’ hostel at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar emerged on October 11. While some student groups alleged that crude bombs were used, the university election officer dismissed the reports as “entirely a rumour,” stating that police are investigating whether the noise was caused by a bomb or a firecracker. The incident at Utkal University led to student protests and clashes with police, prompting authorities to increase security and CCTV monitoring on campus.
