India and Japan strengthen economic and defence ties through strategic summits
India and Japan are significantly deepening their strategic and economic ties through high-level diplomatic and industrial engagements. At the ‘UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026’ in New Delhi, officials and business leaders focused on transforming Uttar Pradesh into a $1 trillion economy by 2030. The summit highlighted major industrial opportunities in sectors such as green hydrogen, semiconductors, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing. Key projects include a ₹2,025-crore plant by Escorts Kubota and ₹1,166 crore in projects by Minda Corporation, which together are expected to create over 10,000 jobs.
On the security front, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is conducting a maiden visit to India, which included a visit to the Western Naval Command in Mumbai. Bilateral talks between Koizumi and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are set to address maritime security, defence technology, and cooperation under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, following Japan's revised principles on defence equipment transfers.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal noted that Japan remains India's fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment, with trade reaching $27.5 billion in the 2025-26 financial year. Japan has set a target to invest 10 trillion yen in India over the next decade, focusing on critical areas like AI, energy, and next-generation mobility.
