Uttar Pradesh Assembly faces seven vacancies ahead of elections

Seven seats in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly are currently vacant following the deaths of several MLAs. The vacancies include four seats held by the BJP, two by the Samajwadi Party, and one by the Bahujan Samaj Party. The most recent vacancy occurred following the death of Chhote Lal Verma, the MLA from Fatehabad.

While Election Commission rules generally require bypolls to be held within six months of a seat becoming vacant, no bypolls are expected before the general assembly elections scheduled for February-March. This is because the remaining term of the current assembly is less than one year.

In preparation for the upcoming elections, Bihar-based political parties including the Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and Vikasashil Insaan Party are expanding their presence in Uttar Pradesh. The JDU is targeting Kurmi and extremely backward class votes, particularly in eastern and central UP districts. LJP (Ram Vilas) is focusing on Dalit communities, while the VIP is concentrating on the Nishad community.
