Uttar Pradesh Monsoon Rains Prompt Orange and Yellow Alerts

The Indian monsoon has become fully active over Uttar Pradesh, bringing heavy rain to many districts. On Tuesday, Kannauj recorded 125 mm of rainfall, with similar totals in Bahraich (104 mm), Itawa (100 mm), Ayodhya (94.8 mm), Lakhimpur Kheri (81.6 mm) and Kanpur (75 mm). The Weather Department issued orange alerts for 12 districts—including Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Kanpur (rural and urban), Unnao, Raebareli, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor and Hamirpur—and yellow alerts for 42 districts such as Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Deoria, Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Farrukhabad, Kanpur, Barabanki, Amethi, Shamli, Bagpat, Meerut, Kasganj, Etah, Mainpuri, Itawa, Auraiya, Amroha, Muradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Sambhal, Badaun and others. Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow warned that the monsoon will remain strong across most of the state through 5‑7 August, after which activity may ease. The continued rain has raised river water levels and caused localized flooding, while temperatures have dropped across the region. Further rain is expected on Thursday, with the department maintaining alerts for heavy to very heavy precipitation.
