Commissioner stays demolition of 38 buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University

The Rampur Development Authority (RDA) ordered the demolition of 38 of the 40 buildings on the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University campus, saying the structures were constructed without the required approvals under Section 27 of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973. On 27 July 2026 the Moradabad Divisional Commissioner issued an interim stay, directing the Rampur district administration to maintain the status‑quo until a further hearing scheduled for 3 August 2026. The stay halts any bulldozer action and temporarily stops the student protest that had been underway against the demolition order. The university was founded in 2006 by former MP Azam Khan and now serves about 3,000 students across 16 departments and 14 faculties, with roughly 55 academic staff and 1,000 employees. Samajwadi Party leaders Tej Narayan Pandey and Congress chief Ajay Rai publicly opposed the demolition and praised the court’s intervention. The case remains pending, with both the RDA and university expected to present further arguments at the next hearing.
