Uttar Pradesh political leaders clash over Rajya Sabha elections

Political tensions are rising in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for October 16. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ravidass Mehrotra stated that the party intends to contest three seats, claiming that internal dissatisfaction within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could allow SP to win all three. Mehrotra noted that the final decision on candidates rests with party president Akhilesh Yadav.

In response, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya dismissed the opposition's efforts to unite, asserting that the BJP will form the government in the 2027 assembly elections regardless of whether the Samajwadi Party, Congress, or BSP contest together or separately. Regarding the Rajya Sabha contest, Maurya indicated that the BJP is prepared to field up to eight candidates and suggested that if the SP fields a third candidate, the BJP may field a ninth to counter them.
