Uttar Pradesh politics heats up ahead of 2027 elections

Political tensions are escalating in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Senior Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav launched a sharp critique against Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Yadav accused the state government of corruption and a lack of accountability toward the public, stating, “If there is BJP, there is corruption; if there is corruption, there is BJP.”

In a separate political development, the BJP has appointed former minister Mohsin Raza as the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Minority Commission. Raza, who will hold cabinet minister status, is tasked with strengthening the government's reach within minority communities. His appointment comes amid ongoing political debates regarding the management of Waqf properties, an issue Raza had previously raised with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Alongside Raza, eight members from diverse social and regional backgrounds have been appointed to the commission to assist in managing minority welfare schemes and community issues.
