Kanwar Yatra 2026 Leads to School Closures and Security Tightening in Uttar Pradesh
The annual Kanwar Yatra, which began on July 30, 2026, has drawn hundreds of thousands of Shiva devotees to Haridwar and across Uttar Pradesh. Pilgrims carry holy Ganga water to temples in their home districts, prompting extensive civic preparations. In Haridwar, authorities installed 300 permanent and 60 mobile toilets, deployed about 6,000 police personnel, and increased CCTV surveillance to manage crowds and maintain cleanliness.
Uttar Pradesh districts have responded with heightened security. Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and other districts placed anti‑Romeo squads, separate women’s queues, anti‑slip mats and barricades at major Shiva temples. Police forces have been reinforced along pilgrimage routes, with additional patrols, vehicle checks and intelligence monitoring after a terror alert warned of possible attacks on the Yatra.
To ensure safe passage for pilgrims, district administrations ordered the closure of all government and private schools, colleges, DIETs and technical institutes from August 3 to August 10 (or August 12 in some areas). The closures affect thousands of students in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and surrounding districts, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and protect students from the massive pilgrim movement.
A distinctive 251‑foot tricolour‑themed Kanwar from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, attracted wide attention in Haridwar, symbolising patriotism and urging youth to stay away from drugs. The combined religious, civic and security measures underscore the scale of the Kanwar Yatra’s impact on public order and infrastructure in the state.
