Kanwar Yatra 2026 pilgrimage

Overview

The Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage, which began on 30 July and is scheduled to run until 11 August, has prompted massive security and civic mobilizations. In Haridwar, authorities deployed approximately 6,000 police personnel, increased CCTV surveillance, and installed 300 permanent and 60 mobile toilets to manage crowds. Following a terror alert, security was reinforced along pilgrimage routes with additional patrols and intelligence monitoring. In Uttar Pradesh districts such as Muzaffarnagar and Meerut, authorities implemented anti-Romeo squads, separate women’s queues, and barricades at major temples. To mitigate traffic congestion, all government and private schools, colleges, and technical institutes in affected districts were ordered to close from 3 August to 10 August (with some extensions to 12 August).

Traffic management remains a critical focus across the Delhi-NCR region. Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories for major corridors including NH-44, the Outer Ring Road, and adjacent service roads, specifically banning Kanwar Yatris from the high-speed UER-II Expressway. Commuters were urged to use the Metro or alternate routes like Narela-Bawana and Burari Road. As the pilgrimage approached its peak during the Sawan Shivratri period, authorities in Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad warned of heavy congestion at Kalindi Kunj, the DND Flyway, and the Badarpur border. In Gurugram, police implemented diversions for 10 and 11 August, directing heavy vehicles traveling toward Rajasthan, Rewari, and Faridabad to use the Dwarka Expressway and the KMP Expressway to bypass city corridors.
