Uttar Pradesh rivers rise amid heavy monsoon rains and red alerts

Heavy monsoon rains in Uttar Pradesh have caused significant rises in the water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, leading to flooding in several cities and a red alert for 18 districts. In Prayagraj, the water levels of both rivers rose by 26 to 40 centimeters within an eight-hour period, with some areas recording a one-meter increase over 24 hours.

While the rivers currently remain below the official danger mark, the rapid rise has caused water to inundate low-lying areas, riverfront roads, and coastal temples. In Sultanpur and Amethi, schools have been closed due to the weather conditions. Other regions, including Ghazipur, Kushinagar, and Chitrakoot, are also experiencing rising water levels in the Narayani and Mandakini rivers.

Local administrations are monitoring embankments and sensitive areas closely. Although authorities state that embankments remain secure, there are growing concerns that continued rainfall over the next week could lead to more severe flooding in rural and coastal villages.
