India weather alert: Heavy rain and storms forecast across 21 states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread weather alerts across India as the monsoon enters its final stages. A significant weather system is developing in the Bay of Bengal, expected to transition from a low-pressure area to a depression and potentially a deep depression by September 22. This system is projected to reach the coasts of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh around September 23.
Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds are forecasted for approximately 21 states. Key regions expected to experience significant weather activity include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. In Jharkhand, all 24 districts are under alert for rain and lightning, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60 km/h. Madhya Pradesh faces a heavy rain alert starting September 24 in districts such as Chhatarpur, Satna, and Damoh.
In southern India, Karnataka is under a yellow alert through September 24, with Bengaluru expected to see increased light to moderate showers and gusty winds. Other affected areas include parts of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and several northeastern states. Residents in hilly regions have been advised to remain cautious of potential landslides due to the heavy precipitation.
