Kanwar Yatra 2026: security measures and travel advisories in Uttarakhand

Police have deployed extensive security for the Kanwar Yatra across the Meerut range, covering 28 major routes that total 969 kilometres. Arrangements include 148 barriers, double‑barricading, signage, lighting, control rooms, CCTV, and the deployment of 157 boats with 139 trained divers and life‑jackets at Ganga ghats and canals. Surveillance will focus on 32 Shiva temples during the ritual "jalabhishek" and at 12 Shravan fairs.

Uttarakhand authorities have issued a travel advisory for the pilgrimage period (30 July‑11 August 2026) affecting Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. The main Delhi–Meerut–Roorkee–Haridwar corridor (NH‑34) and the Delhi‑Meerut Expressway are expected to see heavy congestion, with dedicated Kanwar routes and parking zones, vehicle diversions via the Natraj Bypass, Laxman Jhula barrage and other alternate roads. Additional diversions may be introduced depending on crowd levels or flooding.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the state’s focus on safety and improving road infrastructure to ensure the pilgrimage proceeds smoothly.
