Uttarakhand expands solar capacity and EV charging infrastructure

Uttarakhand is advancing its renewable energy and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The state has reached a solar power generation capacity of 363.04 MW, supported by the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana. PC Dhyani, Managing Director of the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), noted that while over 23,000 families have achieved ‘zero electricity bills’ under the scheme, the state needs to develop robust battery storage systems to fully utilize solar potential.

UPCL is also progressing with the installation of smart meters, with 42.8% of the state's meters already replaced. These devices allow consumers to monitor real-time usage and offer both prepaid and postpaid options. Additionally, UPCL reported reducing Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses to 13.58% for the 2025-26 financial year.

In the transport sector, Uttarakhand has become the leading Himalayan state in EV charging infrastructure, boasting 221 stations, including 84 fast chargers. Transport Minister Pradeep Batra stated that EV ownership is rising, with 1.04 lakh registered electric vehicles in the state. The government is focusing on expanding the charging grid along major tourist corridors and Char Dham pilgrimage routes to support cleaner travel and reduce range anxiety.
