Uttarakhand renewable energy and infrastructure development

Overview

Uttarakhand is expanding its renewable energy capacity and supporting infrastructure. The state-owned utility Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam (UJVN Limited) initiated a competitive tender for a 90 MW/225 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near the Chilla Hydroelectric Project to improve grid reliability and renewable integration.

Complementing these storage efforts, the state has reached a solar power generation capacity of 363.04 MW. To support this growth, the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) is implementing smart meters and has reported a reduction in Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses to 13.58% for the 2025-26 financial year.

In the transport sector, the state has established 221 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, making it a leader among Himalayan states. The government is currently focusing on expanding this charging grid along major tourist corridors and pilgrimage routes to accommodate the rising number of registered electric vehicles.
