Uttarakhand heavy rains cause landslides, block highways and flood Rudraprayag’s Namami Ghat

Continuous heavy rainfall on July 6 in Uttarakhand triggered landslides that blocked the Badrinath National Highway at several points, including Bhanarpani, Gulabkoti and Birahi‑Nijmula. The blockages cut off rural connectivity and prompted authorities to suspend vehicular movement on the affected stretches.

The district administration ordered schools in the impacted districts to remain closed and issued an orange alert, urging residents to avoid travel near rivers, streams and landslide‑prone zones. In Rudraprayag, the Alaknanda River rose to 622.90 m above mean sea level, completely submerging the Namami Ghat. Officials urged people living along the riverbanks to relocate to safe areas. The Pithoragarh administration temporarily halted the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat pilgrim yatra and stopped issuing Inner Line Permits until further notice. Work to clear debris and restore traffic is ongoing.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels and have appealed for extreme caution as the heavy rains persist.
