Vaca Muerta expansion drives record industrial employment in Neuquén
The expansion of the Vaca Muerta energy basin is driving significant economic growth in Neuquén, Argentina. In July 2026, national oil production reached a record 916,200 barrels per day, with Vaca Muerta contributing over 70% of that total at 643,100 barrels per day, representing a 26.4% year-on-year increase.
This energy boom has led to a historic peak in industrial employment. During the first quarter of 2026, manufacturing employment in Neuquén reached 14,382 salaried workers, the highest level since 1996. While industrial employment has fallen by 6% nationally over the last three years, Neuquén has seen a 15% increase in the same period and a 64% increase over the last five years.
The growth is creating a diverse demand for labor. Beyond technical oil and gas roles, there is an increasing need for workers in logistics, accommodation, food services, cleaning, and maintenance. Projections from YPF suggest the region could see a peak of 90,000 new jobs by 2029, with approximately 30,000 of those in non-specialized service and logistics sectors.
