Vaca Muerta shale development targets major LPG export growth
The Vaca Muerta shale formation is positioned to become a major driver of Argentine economic growth, particularly through the expansion of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports. According to research from the Universidad Austral, LPG exports could exceed 2 billion USD annually starting in 2030.
Projections suggest that total LPG production could reach between 4.4 and 4.8 million tons by 2030, potentially rising to 9 million tons annually if sufficient infrastructure projects are realized. This growth is expected to open new markets in the region and Asia, supported by planned investments in Bahía Blanca, General Cerri, and Río Negro.
In a recent 'Shale in Argentina' event held in Houston, Neuquén Governor Rolando Figueroa emphasized that Vaca Muerta's impact extends beyond the province, contributing to national foreign exchange reserves and stimulating development in other Argentine provinces. The discussions highlighted the necessity of infrastructure development to ensure long-term social and economic sustainability.
