Romania investigates two mass food poisoning incidents involving children

Authorities in Romania are investigating two separate incidents of suspected mass food poisoning involving children.

In Bacău County, the Red Intervention Plan was activated after 49 students at the “Răducanu-Rosetti” Gymnasium in Căiuți reported symptoms including nausea and vomiting. The illness occurred after the students consumed approximately 500 portions of pasta provided by a catering company under the “Healthy Meal” program. Most children were treated at the Onești Municipal Hospital or the Bacău County Emergency Hospital, and all remain in stable condition. An epidemiological investigation is underway to determine the exact source.

In Bihor County, 13 students from Oradea fell ill after staying at a pension in Vadu Crișului between September 9 and 11. The children reported digestive issues after consuming pasta. Two students required hospitalization, while others remained in home isolation. Authorities have fined the pension 25,000 lei and suspended its food preparation activities. Investigators are examining both the food and the possibility that the children consumed water from a nearby spring.
