Child safety and health concerns in Romania

Overview

Authorities in Romania have addressed multiple safety and health concerns involving children. Initially, consumer protection agencies issued warnings regarding defective products, including cribs in Constanța kindergartens that deform under weight and pose risks to musculoskeletal development. Additionally, European safety alerts identified school supplies, such as notebooks and pencil cases, containing hazardous levels of phthalates and cadmium, as well as items presenting choking hazards.

Following these alerts, investigations were launched into two separate mass food poisoning incidents. In Bacău County, 49 students reported nausea and vomiting after consuming pasta provided by a catering service under a school meal program. In Bihor County, 13 students experienced digestive issues after consuming pasta at a pension. In the latter case, authorities fined the establishment 25,000 lei and suspended its food preparation activities while investigating both food and water sources.
