Valdieri forest fire in Italy persists as Canadair aircraft fight flames

A forest fire ignited by a lightning strike continues to burn on Monte della Piastra near Valdieri in the Piedmont region. After more than 36 hours, the blaze has consumed at least 40 hectares of forest and threatens the frazione of San Lorenzo.

Firefighting efforts involve the local fire brigade, the Anti‑Incendi Boschivi (AIB) teams, volunteers from the Alpi Marittimee protected area, and Canadair aircraft that are repeatedly refilled with water from the sea. The municipality of Valdieri has issued an alert urging residents and motorists to avoid the provincial road leading to the Alta Valle Gesso, which may be temporarily closed to ensure safety.

Police are present to direct traffic and enforce the temporary road restrictions while support teams provide food and water to the personnel working on the front line.
