Vale sued by MPF over environmental damage in Congonhas mine

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has filed a civil public action against Vale, the National Mining Agency (ANM), and the government of Minas Gerais to address environmental damages caused by the overflow of water and sediment at the Viga mine in Congonhas in January 2026.

The MPF is requesting the hiring of an independent technical audit, funded by Vale, to monitor environmental safety and operational security at the site. Additionally, the prosecution has requested the freezing of R$ 200 million from Vale to guarantee reparations and the suspension of mining rights transfers. This follows an inspection by the ANM, which ordered a total shutdown of the mine after finding compromised infrastructure and a lack of proven operational safety.

Vale stated it was unaware of the legal action but remains engaged in discussions with the MPF for an out-of-court settlement, noting that the company is taking necessary measures for area recovery.
