Valencia and Guayaquil start major building rehabilitation projects

In Valencia’s Font Dolça neighbourhood, the municipal government has finally secured a contractor to renovate 166 mid‑20th‑century apartments. Funded by European Union resources and the Valencian regional government, the scheme will replace asbestos roofs, install SATE façade insulation, upgrade windows and fit photovoltaic panels on every building, aiming for a 70 % reduction in energy consumption. Officials cite a tight labour market and high demand for construction services as challenges, but stress the project will improve thermal comfort and lower heating and cooling costs for residents.

Meanwhile, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the historic Casa Tola—built in 1918 and located at the intersection of 9 de Octubre and Gregorio Escobedo—will be remodelled by private investors. Project leader Héctor Zambrano says the façade will be preserved while deteriorated structural elements are removed, with work slated to begin in September 2026. The redevelopment will give the building a commercial use while retaining its architectural details, aiming to revive a landmark that has suffered façade collapses since 2022.
