Urban renewal projects in Guayaquil
Overview
The Guayaquil Municipality, led by Mayor Aquiles Alvarez, has invested approximately USD 19 million in urban renewal and infrastructure projects to revitalize the city center. These works include the renovation of Plaza San Francisco, the regeneration of Ayacucho Street, and the rehabilitation of nearly 15 kilometers of central streets.
Further investments have targeted LED lighting on Avenida 9 de Octubre and the renovation of Bicentenario and José Joaquín de Olmedo plazas to enhance security and mobility. Recent municipal efforts have expanded to include an urban reconstruction plan focused on upgrading sewage and drainage systems alongside road improvements. This strategy involves replacing traditional asphalt with high-durability rigid concrete in several key sectors, such as Calle Rumichaca, Calle Los Ríos, and Avenida Rodolfo Baquerizo Nazur, to prevent underground collapses and sewage leaks.
Recent developments include the 100% completion of the Julio Cartagena park in the Juan Montalvo sector following a USD 249,000 investment. Additionally, reconstruction work has commenced on Clemente Ballén Street. This specific project has prompted the Transit and Mobility Authority (ATM) to reroute 20 urban bus lines and close certain intersections for approximately three months. To support these works, the municipality has designated six free collection centers across the city to manage construction waste and prevent illegal dumping in public spaces.
