Valencia persimmon crops suffer 20 million euro loss from hail

A severe hailstorm on August 20 has caused significant damage to persimmon crops in the Ribera del Júcar region of Valencia, Spain. Agricultural associations estimate total losses at over 20 million euros, affecting approximately 2,400 hectares of land.

Agroseguro has announced it expects to pay 17 million euros in indemnities to affected producers. To expedite the process, the organization has deployed approximately 20 collaborating experts to the field. In cases where damage is near total, claims may be settled after a single visit.

The storm has resulted in a projected 20% reduction in Valencia's persimmon production just before the autumn harvest season. Beyond the immediate loss of fruit, the hail caused physical damage to the trees, with some reports indicating wounds reaching the wood, which may require treatment to ensure future productivity.
