Valentina Cavallar criticizes anti-doping protocols after mother's death
Austrian professional cyclist Valentina Cavallar, of the SD Worx-Protime team, has publicly criticized anti-doping protocols following a traumatic personal experience. Cavallar revealed on Instagram that she was subjected to a surprise doping test at her home just hours after the death of her mother.
The athlete described the incident as “deeply painful, profoundly out of place and disrespectful towards my family,” noting that the testing took place in a room adjacent to where her mother’s body lay. While Cavallar emphasized her support for clean sport and the necessity of testing, she called for greater humanity, compassion, and respect for the individuals behind the athletic protocols.
Following the loss of her mother in September, Cavallar had already decided to end her competitive season early after the Tour de France Femmes. Her account has reignited discussions regarding the balance between strict anti-doping enforcement and the mental and emotional welfare of professional athletes during extreme personal crises.
