Valentina Cavallar anti-doping protocol controversy

Overview

Austrian professional cyclist Valentina Cavallar criticized anti-doping protocols after undergoing a surprise doping test at her home shortly after her mother’s death. Cavallar described the incident as “deeply painful, profoundly out of place and disrespectful towards my family,” noting that the testing occurred in a room adjacent to where her mother’s body lay.

While Cavallar expressed support for clean sport, she called for more compassion and respect for athletes facing extreme personal crises. In response, the International Testing Agency (ITA) issued an apology to the SD Worx-Protime climber. The ITA stated that neither the agency nor the doping control officer was aware of the death prior to arrival, and that the officer learned of the passing upon reaching the residence. The agency noted that while the family cooperated with the procedure without requesting a postponement, they acknowledged the timing caused significant distress.
