Valerii Zaluzhny sparks debate over Ukraine's NATO membership prospects

Valerii Zaluzhny, the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and current ambassador to the United Kingdom, has sparked a new debate regarding Ukraine's potential membership in NATO.

In recent media statements, Zaluzhny expressed skepticism regarding the realistic prospects of Ukraine joining the alliance. He argued that current Ukrainian military capabilities are not compatible with NATO, noting that the alliance's military doctrines are based on approaches from the Second World War era. Furthermore, he stated that Russia has developed countermeasures against nearly every significant NATO system deployed in Ukraine, suggesting that the alliance requires a fundamental change in its military doctrine.

Analysts from the Association for International Affairs (AMO) suggest these remarks could shift Ukraine's perception of itself. They note that Zaluzhny's comments challenge the established idea that NATO membership is the sole guarantor of national security. This shift may position Ukraine as a more independent security actor, moving away from a singular focus on Euro-Atlantic integration and toward alternative forms of military cooperation.
