Ukraine NATO membership debate
Entities: Ukraine · United Kingdom · NATO · Volodymyr Zelenskyy · Russia
Overview
Former Ukrainian army chief Valery Zaluzhnyi, now ambassador to the United Kingdom, told Ukrainian officials in early August 2026 that Ukraine will never become a NATO member, arguing that the alliance still relies on World‑War‑II‑era doctrines and lacks advanced technologies such as missile‑defence and space capabilities. He suggested Ukraine look to emerging European security structures, citing the Joint Expeditionary Force as an alternative.
A few days later he reiterated that Ukraine’s armed forces have exhausted nearly every NATO weapon supplied against Russia and that NATO’s doctrinal framework remains outdated. The Ukrainian foreign ministry said his remarks were taken out of context and reaffirmed Kyiv’s goal of full NATO membership while emphasizing the urgent need for modern defensive systems.
On 6 August 2026 Zaluzhnyi told reporters that Russia has developed counter‑measures to almost all NATO weapons used by Ukraine, listing systems from Stingers and Javelins to HIMARS, Abrams tanks and F‑16 fighters, while noting the absence of Tomahawk missiles, nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers and F‑35 jets. He again called for a comprehensive NATO overhaul and proposed a new European‑centered security bloc to meet modern warfare demands, while maintaining his support for Ukraine’s eventual accession. His comments coincided with speculation about a potential presidential candidacy.
