Valkenburg hosts underground Christmas markets in the Netherlands

The historic town of Valkenburg, located in South Limburg near Maastricht, is known for its unique Kerststad Christmas market. The event features markets held within the town's old streets and inside various underground caves, including the Gemeentegrotte and the Fluweelengrotte.

The Gemeentegrotte is noted as the oldest and largest underground Christmas market in Europe, offering handmade goods, decorations, and treats. The Fluweelengrotte, situated beneath a castle ruin, features light installations and crafts set against centuries-old marl walls. The upcoming season is scheduled to run from November 13, 2026, to January 3, 2027.
