Honduras begins Semana Morazánica holiday amid fuel cost disputes

Honduras has begun the Semana Morazánica holiday period, with authorities projecting that approximately 500,000 people will travel domestically. The tourism sector anticipates an economic impact exceeding 600 million lempiras. To facilitate travel, the government has introduced digital vehicle inspection documents via the BIEN app and increased security patrols in strategic areas like Cortés.

While the holiday is underway, the National Transport Council (CNT) has ruled out a strike during this period, ensuring uninterrupted service for travelers. However, transport leaders have issued an ultimatum to President Nasry Asfura, demanding urgent meetings to address rising operational costs driven by fuel prices. Although the government has temporarily assumed diesel taxes for 30 days to mitigate costs, transport organizations maintain that these measures are insufficient and have warned of potential future actions if no long-term agreements are reached.

Regional movement is also notable, with El Salvador reporting a significant influx of Honduran tourists, with an expected 20% increase in visitors compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, in El Salvador, transport authorities have increased inspections of heavy vehicles following recent fatal accidents caused by mechanical failures.
