Weather emergencies impact Atacama and Coquimbo regions in Chile

Severe weather systems in July and August have caused significant damage across Chile's Atacama and Coquimbo regions. In Atacama, the commune of Vallenar was the hardest hit, with 3,717 homes affected, including 886 that sustained serious damage. To assist recovery, the government has distributed approximately $8,676 million in recovery bonuses to 9,911 households in the region so far.

In the Coquimbo region, the rural sector of Cruz de Cañas continues to face challenges following intense storms in July that isolated residents and caused fatalities. Due to inaccessible roads preventing traditional water trucks from reaching the area, the Court of Appeals of La Serena organized a solidarity campaign, delivering 260 large water containers to 28 families via 4x4 vehicles to address the immediate lack of potable water.
